Leadership Styles Analysis
Managers read 30 short cases each describing a leader faced with a decision to make. In each case, the manager is asked to choose from a set of five leadership styles the style that they would use if faced with that decision. The manager's 30 choices provide the basis for a personalized 12-page, color report comparing the manager’s choices with his or her peers as well as with a comparison group of managers selected from a data base of almost 200,000 managers similar in level, gender, industry, or nationality. In addition, the manager’s choices are compared with the normative model which purports to predict the consequences of each choice based on available scientific evidence. The manager’s choices are also evaluated in terms of their effectiveness, the quality of decisions made, the implementation of these decisions, the time efficiency, and their contribution to the development of team members.

Since the 30 cases are varied in accordance with a sophisticated experimental design, it is possible for the report to show graphically the factors that influence each manager’s choices and those that the manager overlooks. The report concludes with an individualized set of recommendations to each manager concerning ways to improve his or her effectiveness.

The cases may be answered on-line or in hard copy. When answered on-line, the report may be downloaded immediately or stored for subsequent use in a training program. When taken in hard copy form, an electronic answer sheet can be sent for processing to Decision Making for Leaders.

This leadership assessment tool is suitable for use by managers at all levels. It has most frequently been employed in corporate training programs including GE, American Express, Pfizer, AT&T, and Bristol Myers Squibb. Stanford, Yale, and Tulane are among the universities using this technology in their MBA and executive programs. The assessment devices and leadership profile have been translated into German, Danish, Swedish, and Polish.
