Analyzing a Situation

A decision problem is analyzed by rating it on 11 factors. Each of these factors is potentially relevant to determining the leadership style appropriate to that problem. These situational factors are listed on the top half of the Situation Analysis screen.

If the meaning of a factor is unclear, position your cursor over its name. An explanation will then appear, or click on the name for a more detailed explanation.

Record your judgements by selecting from the different dropdown lists. Clicking on a list will show the alternative choices. Select the alternative that most closely applies to this particular decision problem.

Understanding Results

After you modify each choice, the bottom half of the screen will then display the results in the form of a bar graph. The recommended process or style corresponds to the highest bar on the graph; the least recommended bar corresponds to the lowest bar and so on.

Overall Effectiveness considers all four of the decision criteria and weights them in a manner that is consistent with your judgements of their importance. By choosing Decision Quality Only, Implementation Only, Cost Only, and Development Only options, the bar graph shows only the separate effects of leadership style for that criterion. For example, if you choose Decision Quality Only, you'll see which leadership style that produces the highest quality decision, regardless of implementation, cost, or development. Green bars represent benefits of team involvement, red show risks or costs of team involvement.
